'You Are Now Here' with Black Quantum Futurism
Maps are everywhere around us, ever present
to help us navigate both public and personal
geographies, or orient ourselves in communal
and universal landscapes. But all maps come
with an agenda - as much as maps can reveal
about a place or idea, maps also have the
power to hide or distort truths.
Join us for a workshop from Black Quantum
Futurism to explore the utility and practice of
mapping, and ways in which maps have been
used to disempower people and communities,
and how they can be used as a liberatory
and revelatory tools. We will experiment with
creating quantum maps, sound maps, housing
journey maps, and memory maps.
Black Quantum Futurism is an interdisciplinary
collaboration exploring the intersections of futurism,
creative media, DIY-aesthetics, and activism
in marginalized communities through an alternative
temporal lens. BQF focuses on developing
practices and temporal technologies adapted to
suit marginalized peoples’ survival in a “high-tech”
world dominated by oppressive, fatalistic linear
time constructs.
BQF is the creator of Community Futures Lab
based in Sharswood, North Philly.
North Philly Peace Park is an open, fence-free,
charitable, intergenerational, neighborhood managed
ecology campus championing food,
education and community.
