Textile/Fiber/Mixed Media Artist

Betty Leacraft is a shape shifter of textiles and mixed media fiber, and teaching artist and lecturer residing in Philadelphia. She blends multiple techniques/processes creating works blurring lines between art quilts, wearable art, sculpture, and installation. Her work is informed by artistic/cultural traditions of Africa and the African Diaspora addressing themes of identity, heritage, symbolism, nature, ritual, and the unseen. Betty has received grants, awards, honors, exhibited nationally and internationally; her art quilts have been published in several books authored by Dr. Carolyn L. Mazloomi, scholar/historian, and Founder of the Women of Color Quilters Network. As a teaching artist, Betty creates opportunities for underserved, under resourced communities and individuals though interactive, hands-on textile arts projects.
